Day 6 (Wednesday)
Off to the San Juans today! We took our time on the way out of Echo Park stopping at the petroglyphs and Chew homestead. The Chew ranch was one of the first ranches established in what is now Dinosaur National Monument. In 1966 the Chew family sold 1,900 acres of the ranch in what is now within the Dinosaur National Monument.

From Echo Park we went in to Dinosaur where we got gas and snacks...You could also do you cannabis shopping here! Continuing south out of Dinosaur we took Dragon Rd toward Baxter Pass. Baxter Pass was a nice route but, if it were wet it would be miserable! We crossed over Baxter Pass and stopped for snack. Jim and I shared a sandwich and some Pringles while we waited for everyone to catch up.
From Baxter Pass we headed into Grand Junction for gas and resupplies. While others went to Wal-Mart for Mountain House meals I detoured to Chick-fil-A for a milkshake! We looked around for possible cabins to rent but came up empty. So, we decided to head for a campground off Divide Rd in the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area. I don't know why none of us thought about it. But, being relatively close to town we should have brought some real food to cook on the fire. No steak and potatoes so I had broccoli cheddar soup.
Jim lost a tent pole when leaving Echo Park and had to fashion a cross pole out of a sapling. So, we would make a slight detour to Big Agnes for a replacement tomorrow. We relaxed around a fire before retiring to our tents. Tomorrow we should make it to Silverton.
