Grey's River to Flaming Gorge - Day 4
Mileage: 245
Day 4 (Monday)
Today we would continue south along the Idaho border before cutting east and further south into Utah. It was really windy with flashes of lightning lighting up the sky off & on throughout the night. I thought for sure a thunderstorm would blow through but, it never did. When I peeked out of the tent it still looked like it could rain anytime. So, I hurried to break camp and get packed up in the dry. Just as we were ready to start the bikes it started to rain, with some snow flakes, and continued until about 11:00 AM. I was glad to have my heated jacket & gloves!
Shortly into the morning we hit some super greasy mud on Smith's Fork Rd. The mud quickly filled up the tires and it was impossible to get enough speed to clean them out...It was like riding on glass. It didn't take long for us to decide to turn back and find an alternate route. I'm surprised nobody dropped a bike through it all!
We were able to take FR 10072 west to pick up US-89 and continue south. We dipped into Idaho where we turned onto WY-89 to skirt the Wyoming/Idaho border into Cokeville, WY. We got gas and coffee in Cokeville and took a little break. We moved on toward Kemmerer, WY where we had lunch and picked the track back up.
The Cumberland Roads were the main corridor to move goods and people between Kemmerer and Evanston. J.C. Penney even used these roads to supply his second Golden Rule Store in 1904.
South of Fort Bridger we took Deep Creek Rd (FS 539) to Flaming Gorge. This was a beautiful ride with a great primitive campground at the bottom (Deep Creek Campground). After Deep Creek Rd we had a short ride on UT-44 to get into Flaming Gorge Resort where we had a room reserved. We unpacked, showered and headed for dinner.
